On September 9, 2000 we will gather to
commemorate slaughtered and enslaved Christians in Sudan. The
memorial service is planned to coincide with the United Nations’
Millennium Summit.
Sudan, Africa’s largest
nation, is the scene of a brutal civil war that has claimed two million
lives and has witnessed the rekindling of black slave trade. The
number of victims of Sudan’s holocaust far surpasses that of recent wars
in Chechnya, Kosovo, Bosnia, Rwanda, and Somalia combined. Sudanese
churches are being intentionally burned and bombed along with Christian
schools hospitals and relief centers. Clergy and lay leaders are
imprisoned and killed.
As Franciscan Father Jim Goode, President of
the National Black Catholic Apostolate for Life and the National Black
Catholic Clergy Caucus stated: “ We who witness the Gospel of Life
and who respect the dignity of human of life, must stand in solidarity
before the 136 heads of states in prayer to call for an end to the
killings, enslavement and the moral and physical destruction of human life
in Sudan. As Black Catholics we are calling on the intercession of Blessed
Josephine Bakhita of Sudan, soon to be canonized by Pope John Paul II on
October 1, 2000. On Saturday, September 9, 2000, we will stand in
her name at the United Nations to commemorate the millions of Christians
who have been martyred, tortured and enslaved because of their Faith.
From August 6 to September 14, 2000 has been
declared a time of prayer for Sudan. The National Black Catholic
Apostolate for Life, the National Black Sisters’ Conference, and the
National Black Catholic Clergy are sponsoring these 40 Days of Prayer for
Sudan.
