Brooklyn Congressman Edolphus “Ed” Towns (D-NY) will co sponsor the first Youth AIDS Awareness Conference to discuss the alarming increase in HIV/AIDS among youth in our communities.  The concept was brought to the forefront by Father James E. Goode, OFM (Solid Ground Ministry), who stated “The solution to the rise in STD, HIV and AIDS among our youth will take the combined efforts of the Church, elected officials
and other community leaders if we are to save our future.”

“An intensive mobilization of all community resources are needed to reinforce our efforts to promote the continued awareness of how this terrible epidemic is spreading in our communities,” said Congressman Towns. The Brooklyn Representative emphasized the need for corporation in the fight against the devastation of HIV/AIDS.  In this spirit of cooperation, Congressman Ed Towns joined forces with Councilwoman Annette Robinson, The National Black Leadership Commission on AIDS, Fr. James Goode (Solid Ground Ministry), Berean Baptist Church, Knights of Peter Claver Ladies Auxiliary and The National Black Apostolate For Life to produce this Youth AIDS Awareness Conference.

The Brooklyn Representative concluded: “Through this conference, to be held during the National Week of Prayer in Black Churches for the healing of AIDS, we will be able to educate the young people of the community on the most recent statistics on the AIDS epidemic which identifies them as a high risk group. We will also offer the opportunity for people to get important information about local support resources, prevention strategies and offer information on access to confidential testing.” This event is open to the public.
